The Return of Good Episodes, The Return of Commentary

I almost thought of painting a sign and picketing the BSG Episode Factory these past two weeks. There wasn't really....substance to the previous two episodes, so had I posted anything, it would have been short, boring, and just a little mean. The difference this week was incredible. Let's jump to it (just a little pun for old time's sake).

As hokey as this romance is and as doomed for failure, I'll talk a little about Starbuck and Lee. She feels that this whole thing is "not a big deal", and Lee is all torn up. Why? Because this isn't the first time Starbuck has cheated. My guess is it's some kind of problem from her troubled past displaying itself, just like her tough attitude. Leobon touched on that. As far as Lee goes, he should be used to this whole guilt thing, sneaking around behind Billy's back in the early stages of his courtship with Dee. But I'm forgetting, Billy died so it's okay. If only we could arrange Dualla's death, Lee might be happy again. Well, that could happen, what with Cylons, nukes, and a supernova coming after them. Then this whole love quadrangle will be resolved with all four of them obliterated. Hooray, end of a nowhere plot line!

Is there a reason that Gaius looks like an artist's rendering of Jesus? Is he the one that the Basestar called "The Chosen One", or is that the Chief? The obvious pointer would be that he felt drawn to the temple, "I just got this urge to start...walking, and suddenly, here it is." That whole bit that Cally says about his reverence in the temple, "You should see the look on your face when you're in here. There's this...reverence. You even talk softer." "I feel something in here. Something true...the temple of five." What is the connection between the temple of five and the Cylon final five? I'll get to that in a bit.

By the way, when the Chief enters the temple and the shot pulls back...that is totally sweet. It's pretty obvious that when the light being focused down from a point near the ceiling hits the center of that circle, everything is going down. The final five will be revealed (unless the Cylons have got it all wrong), the star is going to go supernova, and the nukes are getting launched. It's all a question of precise timing.

I've always wondered how the writers decide when Adama is going to "take it on the speaker" and when to listen to a call on the headset. When the Cylons jump in and start talking, you would think he would say "patch it through down here" like he has done so many other times when it's a sensitive matter with the possibility of, say, a Cylon activation code being sent through the speakers making all of their sleeper Cylons go on a rampage.

This whole Gaius-Jesus thing has got me thinking...what if Caprica, Baltar, and D'Anna are supposed to emulate the Triune God of Christianity? In that order it would be Mother, Son, and Holy Spirit. Maybe this whole thing is just because Cylon hair doesn't grow. Or...it does, and they just kill themselves and download into a new body when they need a trim. I imagine it's hard to find a barber shop on a Basestar. "The five lights of the apocalypse rising, struggling towards the light, sins revealed only to those who enter the temple, only to the Chosen One. The Chosen One. The Chosen One. The Chosen One. The Chosen One. The Chosen One. The Chosen One." Repeated seven times. Maybe the Son and Holy Spirit really do need to leave the Mother for the world to have the sins revealed.

One of the best lines in this episode when Brother Kabul says, "Yes, we come in peace." What a creepy little man.

Is Laura pregnant? She left the Cylon show-down meeting with a stomachache and is looking a little plump...that might explain why Laura is on Galactica for so much of the time. Later on, she reads, "Five pillars of the temple were fashioned after the five priests devoted to the one whose name cannot be--" There is the reason why the Chief feels that there is a real presence. He's probably a Cylon, really believes in the Cylon God...all of this has happened before and all of it will happen again. Based on Leobon's talks with Kara, that is something that both faiths embrace. Perhaps these 5 priests are the final 5 Cylons in this time through the story. The one they are devoted to takes on a very Jewish face, with an unspeakable or unknowable name. This gives the god of the temple a distinctly monotheistic feel, excepting the Ephesians and their temple to the unknown god (Just in case we missed someone! Please don't get mad at us, Zeus! We didn't mean to forget your 134th son, honest!). So...this is probably a temple to the one Cylon God. I remember there being something about Jupiter from a previous episode that Gaius and D'Anna were fussing about....the connection between the gods of the humans and the God of the Cylons. Is the Eye of Jupiter the face of the Cylon God?

Now...who are the final five?

Where is that confounded bridge?!

well, if this is the place that D'Anna was seeing in her crossing over experiences... and it does seem named after the FIVE... five priests, five cylons, five flashbacks? So D'ANNA has been seeing five faces on her visits to... presumably, this place. That would make the five missing models related to this place, maybe they are the five priests. One of those five cylons and/or priests might be "The Chosen One". The one to whom the Eye of Jupiter speaks. It points the way to earth, but only to the "Chosen One". D’Anna THINKS she is the Chosen One, but hard to believe it’s not the chief. He feels something "true", about the temple.

So I think it puts the Chief back on the list... he had flash backs and might be the Chosen one. The Chosen One could be one of the Five Priests. Chief came from a priest, and didn’t a cylon priest tell him, we thought facetiously, that he was a cylon? Dark thoughts? Chief almost killed the future mother of his own child. As we now know, the cylons don’t know who the five are or what they look like. At least no cylons we are being exposed to. Even six is demonstrating that she doesn’t know… she speculates along with Gaius. Therefore…cylons don't yet know the chiefs baby is important. Hence no attempts to grab the child.

But now I think for the Chief to be a cylon, then The Chosen One needs to be one of the five priests. Because I’m definitely ready to assume the temple Five are also the cylon Five. Which also implies btw…. The 13th colony already has some connection to the cylons…. Either direct or indirect. Someone with knowledge of the five priests and this temple must have wanted or created 5 cylons to play their roles.

The new cylons evolved? From metal toasters? Who REALLY created the new cylons?

I'm thinking the 13th colony in this retelling of the eternal story are the Cylons, and this is like a second exodus. That's an important line, the "all of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again..."

uh oh.... as the Lady of the Basestar was sitting up in her tub... repeating "The Chosen One"... and D'anna closes her eyes, the tub lady, I believe, is staring slightly to the right... at a wide-eyed Baltar.I don't know... you asked the question in your posting... now I think Gaius might be the Chosen One.

Didn't Six say that to gaius long ago? God has chosen you? Right about the time he did his semi-"jesus on the cross" pose in the caprica projection, on his back porch looking up at the camera with forearms resting on the wooden railing... and palms up as I recall.

Ya know... this could be the way they pull Gaius back into the human community... by making him part of the prophecy.

If anyone wants to post a link to some spoilery material with a big, bright warning about it, feel free. I will, however, not allow spoilers directly on my site. So please, please, restrain yourselves, people. I enjoy the work that RDM and Co. do, and I don't want to cheapen the episodes by looking at pieces of them beforehand.

Well, you did ask who the final five are.
Kidding. I support your decision to stay spoiler-free completely, and in fact I've decided to avoid one particular BBoard so that I don't get any more spoiled for the rest of the season than I already am. That, and the pro-Athena/anti-Athena debate just won't stop.

Raise your hand if you think that the "soon to go supernova" sun IS the Eye of Jupiter?

hey now there's an idea. They keep pointing the camera at this round indentation on one side of the megalith, there's not even a jewel or soon to be glowing half orb sticking out of one end. It's just a relief.

"and The Chosen One said: "and the heavens opened up and they saw the eye"

Reepicheep's theory sounds good. SuperNova probably counts as "heavens opening up". It also gives us a reason for the supernova plotline in the first place.

So like laiac said... "when the light being focused down from a point near the ceiling hits the center of that circle, everything is going down".

If that light at the top of the temple is sunlight, that supernova is headed right for the temple. Maybe the supernova powers the temple, getting sucked right into the temple... like it was a black hole or something, bringing the five to life. Maybe not... that's a little too shark-jumpish. That's the one problem though... any plot that doesn't involve getting out before the supernova hits.... is going to be a tough sell.

Is it me, or did the conclusion of the "Eye of Jupiter" utterly fail to deliver the goods!!?!?

I'm wondering who she talked to. I'm trying to read D'Anna's expression around the Five... and she doesn't seem to change espression hardly at all, even when she decides to speak to one. It changed a little. At that point, it looks like she only recognizes one, because otherwise why not say something to the others. To that one she apologizes as if she had done something offensive to him/her in the past.

Thinking of who she would recognize, I remember for sure she has met Gaius, Lee, and Kara while on Galactica making the documentary. She would know Laura from seeing news of her. Did she meet chief? Tigh? Well Lee is the one who she had a slight spat with in the barracks, when he told her to get the camera out... barracks were off limits... that's my guess as to who she was talking to.

Based on the way she acted, I'm thinking maybe he was the only crew member on the Five.

AND.... I think her reaction says Gaius was not one.

well... I did love the very, very end... my one question there is: has anyone gone back to season 2 to see whether that pattern was revealed to us when they visited Kara's apartment on caprica? I seem to remember there were some paintings, but wasn't there something on the wall as they entered the stairs. I remember the "poetry" written there. But was the pattern there kind of loosely drawn around everything written on the wall?

Was the poetry a clue?

seems to me, to reepicheep's comment, the ending was designed to *NOT* reveal who the final five cylons were. I guess I kind of thought there would be some revealing. Learning that the next direction is toward another supernova... because patterns in the temple match what the supernova looks like.... I though that was kind of on the weak side. The writers blew up an entire solar system for that. I would have liked seomthing a bit more metaphysical, for the lack of a better word. Especially with all the talk early about the coincidence that everybody would arrive at the same time, just when a star was getting ready to nova.

Besides, wasn't the "eye" to deliver it's message only to the chosen one. and deliver it's message within the temple? I don't feel like the writers were consistent with their own mythology. Seems like they switched one mythology for ... "okay lets go find another nova that looks like this one!" Turns out the eye is a signpost, just up ahead, which could have been interpreted without anyone, including the chosen one being in the temple.

But I did enjoy all the scene around the revealing of the Five within the temple (to a character immediately eliminated from the show), Gaius Angst, and we get to see the basestars are evidently huge boxing operations.

So they built a temple designed to deliver a message to the chosen one, where it sits for thousands of years and then, by design, will only reveal it's message (did it?) to someone about 100 seconds before the temple and entire planet are destroyed by a supernova. It does seem highly unlikely that the temple's purpose would ever be successful.

BUT I still enjoyed the episode as a whole, especially the Helo/Kara conversation at the end. Is the eye of jupiter still with us in the story, or were they just reminding us that Kara is special?

D'anna recently met and totally offended Bill Adama. I still think he's the chosen one, leading his flock to earth. He's looked to as a father figure and treats his crew as his children. Plus, if anyone has seen the out takes on DVD, there is something very deliberate about the way he selected his crew, even before he had command of Galactica. In particular his devotion to saving Tigh.

Also , his idea to find earth, even though he is not a religious man. He was the first to suspect that cylons looked human. Why? The comment about him always wanting a daughter... because 3 was a nice round number? I think he is Starbuck's "father". The mucis was the same cylon number. Her father was abusive/ hard on her 101? Bill adama was hard on his sons. Cylon parenting 101? There's more to Bill Adama than we know.
;)

I beilieve that Bill Adama is a cylon who has is trying to make ammends for his sins.

And why the need for cold storage of Cylopns? Have they used this before when there is a rift in their ranks? And on whom?

I didn't mean to be flip with my question... I guess it was more rhetorical in nature. Simply put, I was expecting a reveal that might have caused a lesser man (or woman) to soil their armor. Let's face it, this show is great but it is almost as good as ABC's "Lost" at getting you pumped up for a reveal, only to slap you with a cold, wet herring. We don't know any more now, than we did at the opening credits of the Eye of Jupiter, part 1.

Starchild, you have read my mind, with regard to the writers inconsistency on the "mythology." It was a wee bit far-fetched that the 13th colony would have built a temple for 1 person, thousands of years later, to see the "final five" by the light of a supernova mere minutes before that same supernova wiped the planet (and the temple) out of existence.

I still don't understand why I should give a gosh darn about the "final five." Furthermore, I truly don't understand why a marker left by the 13th colony would contain an epiphany meant for Cylon eyes?!!?!? I keep arrivng at the conclusion that this co-mingling of Cylon and Human mythology is going to resolve itself with the revelation that the 13th colony was actually a group of exiled Cylons... and I find that LAME.

Speaking of lame, I was genuinely annoyed at the decommissioning of the 3 series. I found that to be a total cop out of unmitigated proportions.

All of my complaints aside... I too had the impression that D'Anna was speaking to Willliam Adama. With regard to Baltar, he may have been one of the five, but it may not have surprised her.

I was also surprised and pleased at the closing with the intimation that Kara was somehow tied to the prophecy. I hope that Moore and Co decide to put some "meat on the bones" very soon with regard to Kara's "uniqueness."

from midpoint of first episode of season 3... back on New Caprica:

Leoben says you will love me
Kara says you're insane
Leoben says to see the face of god is to know insanity....

so: he is staring right at Kara when he says it.

The next time we hear about seeing the face of god, it's D'anna.

So maybe that's the clue.... Maybe D'Anna spoke to Kara. Maybe Kara is soft-wired to the eye of Jupiter symbol because she is one of the five priests.

I enjoyed the "An Incident at Owl Creek Bridge" re-enactment at the open. But I'm trying to figure out something. ID-Six seems to be less protective of Gaius all the sudden. She tells him he is doing the right thing by hanging himself.... then later casually suggests that maybe he's no longer afraid of going out the airlock.

He almost reveals her presence while under drugs, so she actually pulls him underwater while he is in midsentence to keep them from suspecting one of the squirrels in his attic is really a cylon.

Don't know.... just seems like there has been a change. And why would she be so fearful of them learning about her presence in his mind.... or fearful of them learning that he believes he is the Chosen One? hmmm.

now that Bill Adama is projecting... as of the FEB 18 episode, that pretty much leaves Hera as the only one not projecting.

I enjoyed seeing ID-gaius return to Caprica's conscious mind... I think that was last week. I hope they use that more... maybe his initial attempts at getting caprica to change her ways was so successful he just disappearred for a while.

As non-arc episodes go, I enjoyed this one... Bill's splitting time with his x-wife's memory once a year, right down to even the memory being duplicitous. He misses her anyway. Is it my imagination that they found someone who seemed at a first glance to resemble D'Anna?

They are on a relationship binge here... we've had the Lee/Kara saga, now Chief/Calley... and soon it appears Bill v Laura. The season must be closing soon right? I'm guessing they will save that for next season.... in the meantime we still don't know why Gaita tried to kill Baltar. He must have done something on New Cap that we don't know about yet... to be revealed in the Trial!

sorry to hear about your problems in the UK, a BSG blackout would be tough.

itunes does sell BSG episodes... I think one day after they air. So if you can watch an itunes file on your computer or you own itunes... then you can get them thee. Up to 640x480 I think... not bad. I don't know how to read the files on a computer, apple may not sell software for that... try searching the web for something.

If that's no good... Try looking around on http://www.scifi.com/pulse/ and just http://www.scifi.com... though I don't think they sell the episodes until DVD's come out. They do post recaps, 3 minute versions of the episodes... though I'd want to wait for the whole thing.

good luck!

I'm starting to lose interest in this season. I can't say that any of the last 5 episodes have been bad... just no plot advancement. This season started out with such a bang and had great momentum... but since "Eye of Jupiter" this season has stalled out.

I did have one moment of hope though... just before Starbuck's Viper imploded, she seemed to be engulfed in a bright white light. I had to catch my breath because I thought that we might get the "Ship of Lights." But alas, no love... not yet anyway.

How many eppy's left before the end of the season?

I had the impression that next week is either the end or begins the end... as in a "to be continued" episode... like this one was.

I tend to agree with reep that the shows have been flat. I've been thinking the plots have become soap operish. Lee and Dualla fight, they get back together, now they've split again. We've seen much more of them not getting along than we have of any relationship... at least starbuck & Mr. Pyramid spoke to each other.

The blowup between Lee and Bill seemed over the top to me. I don't buy that Adama is such a military commander and yet immediately jumps to conclusions about Lee lying, without trying to get the facts first. Okay, though maybe he was lying, we really don't know. Next week or next season.... they'll be friends again. Now suddenly Laura is threatening to fire her aid? "Comb your Hair!!, or I'll find someone who can!" I dunno Laura... she looked fine to me.

The one relationship I do admit to liking is Tigh v. everyone, the blow up and reuniting of him and adama seemed to be pretty believable. His "relationship character" has a lot of credibility to me.

I still like some of the episodes.... Tigh and Pyramid Guy both hearing music... hmmmm the two leaders of the New Caprica rebellion?

And last week, when we first met Bono, and he took off his sunglasses when he was talking to The Six, for a second didn't he look like Gaius?? Now he doesn't, but I swear when we saw his face for the first time... he had Gaius 's eyes and eyebrows.

Oh well, the music in the walls could be very interesting... and waiting to discover the where/what of Starbucks new ascension.... ya know if Pyramid Guy recognized the song, or a song.... what if the music is starbuck attempting to communicate with people?

There must be some way outta here...
Was that music really the trigger to kick off the Four's programming. Or was it really meant for us... a distinctly EARTH song... letting us know why we have to wait until 2008? Because they are burnt, cabin feverish, ready to walk the plank, under enormous pressure (well you know... "enormous" for show folk)?

Except for the 2008 part at the end... I thought the show was really cool. That trigger was more of a Close Encounters trigger, they skip making mountains out of mashed potatoes and go straight to the meeting place. Was that the wrestling/workout room?

One goes back to the prez, the other to the great adama, and say they are there for them. So the only programming was to go to that room? Theoretically it means that there is some reason for those 4 (NOT five) to each know the other three are cylon. Or maybe our fifth heard the music too, but declined the invitation. I swear I heard someone say... "got to find a way out of here".... very early in the show, or maybe even last week. It was incongrous at the time, somebody in the background... BUT was it one of our four??

Nice music that last quarter of the show by the way... they each sing along with the lyrics ("all along the watchtower" of course, a distinctly EARTH song.).

Well I'm watching again... is it my imagination but did Ms. Presidents Helper 's eye light up there when she is with Sam... as she turns to the right of the screen.... as in the international symbol of a blade runner replicant?

chief and sam... "the music. Like something from Childhood."
