301 Season Opening Impressions

Guest post by Model List

Here are some first impressions. The two part episode needs another viewing.

Well, as we knew, Season 3 is definitely going to keep things fresh in any way it can. Almost every character changed hair style or weight! The known Cylons get more chances to play multiple roles in the same scene. It's okay, but the separate storylines showing unique personality has to come back or it will just get too confusing. (Which Six was killed? The hero? Will they download her?) Admiral Adama is in a tight spot and has an interesting remoteness. I think he needs to do more yelling.

Kara's journey from regular killings of Leoben to holding his hand is maybe a little rushed, but it certainly is an interesting plotline. She keeps adding to her internal conflict and list of love interests.

We can actually feel kind of sorry for Gaius. James did a great job acting as usual. Hopefully, he won't have to snivel the rest of his life. Not much of a clue on his Cylon status.

"Jamie Bamber is hot!" ... Not! It sure is fun that all of the fawning fangirls have a chubby Jamie. They did a nice job making his porkyness obvious in every scene. Later in the season, I am sure we will get the montage that gives us those carved "guns" and abs back. A second viewing will give some chance to look for Lee is a Cylon references.

Seinfeld reference? The "twist" and "swirl" reference just didn't seem as funny as in Seinfeld and it really was groaningly obvious.

So, time to update the list of models. The first suicide bomber, Duck, is a cylon since he says "See you soon" to D'Anna Biers.

Actually, he said "see you soon" to his wife, who died in the Webisodes. In other words, I'm going to die and go to the same place you are.

So Duck would not be a cylon.

I'm in complete agreement about the "rushed" feel of the Kara/Loeben plotline. I thought that the "girl falling and hurting herself on the stairs while Kara regains her composure in the bathroom" was trite. I saw it coming. Now let's see if the writers can make it interesting (i.e. if we find out that Loeben hurt the girl on purpose just for the reason of currying Kara's sympathy). That being said, I would like to see Kara kill off a few more Loebens in new and interesting ways... In the library with the candlestick maybe?

One thing that storyline did make me think about though... Cylons just don't seem to get that part of "love" is for the unique characteristics of the person loved. Would I love my wife as much... would I worry about her well being as much if I knew that there was an exact copy into which her "soul" could be downloaded? Interesting question, eh?

I so wanted Gaius to tell 6IBH to kiss his arse. I really wanted to see Baltar finally draw the line. He was soooooo close! Why is it that the actor with (imho) the best talent on the show gets to play such a pitiful (and as you said, snivelling) character? It works, and it keeps me thinking that I will enjoy the moment he finally stands up to 6ibh all the more.

I didn't have any use for all the sex and Seinfeld references. I don't buy the suggestion that she's being unfaithful to save/spare Tigh. I really wish the writers could be more creative... I don't need to see the sex. (I sound more and more like my parents... but I digress).

I'm starting to think that the writers have put themselves in quite a pickle. I'm having trouble figuring out how the Galactica/Pegasus can return, rescue the settlers, and get back on track for finding Earth without a few sharks being jumped in the process. Also, I will be annoyed if it takes beyond 2-3 episodes to resolve this and get on with this Earth business.

That all being said, I'm most interested to see how (formerly preggers) Sharon fits in working with the resistance. Imho, that is the most interesting plotline to develop in the premiere.

I'm sure I'll have more reflections after another viewing.

With the season premiere's of Lost and Galactica this week, I can honestly say... "It's been a good week, Tater."

Peace!

In fact Duck used her name... was it DOnna? He said see you soon... Donna.

so... not a cylon. However.... I thought that our other webisode star was in the room... who was it that said hello to Duck (his call sign was Duck?) when he first entered the room with all the police grads? shouldn't that person be dead?

oh yeah.... and Kara knows the child falling was setup.... the odds of it being a fortuitous accident are too remote... and I have no doubt Kara has switched strategies... though I also thought the repeated killings of Leobons would have been fun. But Kara has given up on that.

But Leobon.... unfamiliar with the emotions that love can bring... will have trouble recognizing this as a ploy (reference several classic Trek episodes on that point), and it will confuse him and put his guard down.

For me the only real question from that part of the episode is.... who is the baby *really*. After all the trouble they went thru with Sharon and Helo, and all the "one thing the cylons were missing..... love" from last season.... there is no way that this is a cylon-human child. As we know Leobon always tells the truth. So we need a careful parsing of exactly what did he say to Kara about the child.

...and oh yeah. Jamie like, holy cow! I hope that's all prosthetics and special effects. I mean.... he looks like he's starting to develop boils on his face. And where did he get all the food out in space... is he eating the crew?? Maybe that's what they meant by a skeleton crew! Hey don't forget.... next episode is friday the 13th!

I think they are changing Jamie into the Baron Harkonnen. It's a difficult plot line.

Just cruising by here, thought I'd leave my .02. Although Loeben said "Adama is a Cylon", he never said *Lee* Adama. The preview for next week flashed by pretty quick, but I could have sworn that I saw Adama the Elder (can't think of his first name right now) say he led the initial attacks against the colonies. I thik it's possible that he's the cylon, but I don't think it's actually him. Hear me out, this might be abit crazy, maybe even just a bit chicken flavored. The Cylons have been around for somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 years. The skinjob technology is probably fairly new to them, but who's to say exactly how new. I'm betting that the 12 models were each initially cloned from a human donor, knowing or otherwise. My theory is that Adama got cell-jacked at some point in his career. Maybe he was a captive during the first cylon war and that's what led to him being a civilian for a time, Shell Shock and all the fun stuff that goes with it.

Ronald Moore stated in an interview that the Cylons weren't cloned from original humans. I'm very confident that Adama's guilt in the attack is something else, some mistake he made that provoked the whole mess.

Duck said "See you soon, Nora." Watch the webisodes to see how the Cylons killed Nora.

it occurs to me there is one thing the "old man" might feel guilty for.

Everyon who's down on the surface. chose to go down there. Didn't somebo0dy say that in this episode... Lee maybe? But One person didn't choose, Adama all but ordered Tigh to go down... assuming Tigh would never go to his new life until Bill did.

Now maybe Bill feels guilty about making Tigh go down there... he wants to rescue Tigh and the others... the same way Kara insisted on rescuing the survivors on Caprica.

Okay, so I was wrong on the "see you soon". However, I think there is someone in the bombing that was a Cylon that needed to be downloaded. I am having some problems keeping the new guys straight and Duck did look like Leoben to me. :) I think separate posts for these threads would help.

I agree that the girl falling is a setup, however it looks like Katie is playing it like she was fooled by it.

Of course he didn't say "Lee Adama is a Cylon". That is the whole half-truth. Witness that you and I cannot think of Admiral Adama's first name. (I'm sure it is not Eddie or Lorne.)

Cmdr. Adama's first name is "Martin"... ;-)... roll tape of Scarab Cigar boat...

I like the idea that Kara may be playing her own "long con"... that would make me quite happy.

Still don't see how the rag-tag fugitive fleet will be re-assembled without a shark getting jumped...

As far as Adama's inability to face leaving the rest of humanity behind... I imagine that at some level he believes that doing so (i.e. taking the 2,000 survivors in the fleet and going on to Earth) will undermine their "humanity."

Let me see if I can state that better... I think that Adama believes that risking the lives of the "free" humans now in the fleet is entirely worth it. Otherwise, some part of the survivors "humanity" will be lost.

After all, "leave no one behind" has been a battle cry for centuries.

If I were in Adama's shoes I would raze Heaven and Earth to save the New Caprica colonists.

Admiral Adama's first name is actually William, or Bill for short.
