Cylon Empathy

Now, obviously we are supposed to like Boomer. However, I find myself feeling sympathetic, even piteous for Six. Someone on one of the BSG forums said that last night's episode made them hate Six even more, but I like her more and more as the season goes on. Any thoughts on why this is?

I think you're right about Six suddenly becoming a more likeable character.... I see it mostly related to her increased emphasis on discussing the one true god.

For one thing, the implication of a higher power that her and cylons respect, that she usually describes as a benevolent being.... it's like the Darth Vader effect. Once the Emperor showed up, seeing the awesome evil villain subservient to another made Darth less of a villain. The cylon as subservient to an all powerful benevolent being is much less of a villain.

Related, she is moving from manipulative lover to part time priest.... and soon she'll be conscience as well. She seems to us to be trying to help Gaius instead of outright controlling him and telling him what to do. There was always a bit of philosophy mixed withh sarcasm, but now it seems like their relationship is emphasizing the spiritual now much more than the physical relationship. That makes her easier to trust. It may have started when he told her (and the president) that he wasn't their plaything, and then asked for a break.

I would say though that I sometimes felt like she was not necessarily on the same page as the rest of the cylons.... like she had her own plan. But this season she seems to be in sync... she knows what they have planned and she even seems to be painting the cylons as brothers with the humans? I sometimes wonder though.... what is she really. She looks just like other cylons, but she exists only in Gaius' mind, except when she smashes his head against a mirror or pulls him from burning wreckage. hmmmm. So like, do any other cylons know about her? I'm thinking no. As I was writing this.... I started wondering.... what if *she* is the cylon god. I guess that has a problem... since god had forsaken Kobold.... it doesn't make sense that she would go down there. She could though.... she certainly seems knowledgeable about that time period and what the humans did on kobold. Where would a cylon get that knowledge if humanity had lost it, unless she were there at the time. Maybe she is the cylon equivalent of an angel. The problem with all of this speculation is that I wouldn't think she would just take the form of a one of the 12 cylon models... she would appear unique... well maybe food for thought.

I like where you're going with this that maybe the other Cylons don't know about the Six in Baltar's head. We saw on Caprica in a conversation with Doral that she is jealous of the love between Boomer and Helo. Perhaps she entered into Gaius's mind because she really did want him to love her. (In the mini, she asked him if she loved him, and she keeps hinting at this.) I believe that she is showing deep human emotions, the greatest of these being jealousy.
