Sorry

This post's title has two meanings, much like everything on this show. I am sorry for the prolonged absence. I did watch the Black Market the following morning (as well as Sunday afternoon), but I was not sure what to post.

What I have finally decided on is this--the "Sorry, Kara" from the previous episode. "Black Market" has reflected and magnified this statement. At first, I was thinking he was sorry because was not there to back her up when she faced Cain. Then I thought maybe it was that he was sorry she had to face a superior officer like that. Now that I have seen "Black Market", I feel that Lee is sorry that he went back on what he said to her at the beginning of the season (I love you), and revisited his love on Caprica by means of an escort.

The general idea behind "Black Market" went back to one of the writers' (all writers, for that matter) favorite motifs, the many flaws of humanity. No matter what, we will have this chink in our flawless civilization, the black market, something that appears to set us back, but really is just part of the flavor.

Tonight's episode....what can I say. Starbuck's character is expanded, and we get a nice, cheery ending of "Oh I hope, I hope he is alive." The Apollo-Starbuck dynamic certainly is even more screwed up than before. I really enjoy that the Raiders get reincarnated, and that the raider, this raw animal, killer-instinct creation, can harbor hatred for its opponents, reivisiting its past deaths. Great episode, but not much to comment on from my POV.

And now for the LAiAC plug: Why did Apollo have a hunch that Scar would be where he was?

How can you not comment on the Lee-Six-Gaius scene in Black Market?

I loved the ending, or the pre-ending, with starbuck reciting all the names of the dead she couldn't remember earlier in the episode, and rejecting that part of her that wanted to say none of them would be remembered including the girl in the photo, but she stops as if there is one more name. She finally can't bring herself to list her resistance fighter in the list of the dead... so she's decided to have hope. Pretty cool and Helo says it at the end, now she's got something to fight for.

I suppose if that's the story it will be in podcast, but I caught last week's and there was mild spoilage in it, so I'm staying away from those.

I also loved that flashing wing footage played over and over as backdrop a couple of times, and the close up of scar... cool effect.

I think you're right that was another Lee moment. He just.... had a feeling.

Even though I guess Lee is a cylon and Kara probably isn't.... sure seems like a parallel between Lee floating in space thinking about dying after blasting the resurrection ship, and Kara closing her eyes and thinking about a suicide run against scar.

Similar, in a way, but nothing Cylon about Kara's thoughts.
Scar: Yet another hunch, huh?
Black Market: In that scene, Six was using(read: influencing) Lee in order to test Gaius.
Black Market: What are our thoughts on Lee and reproduction/childrearing now?

yikes... was the woman pregnant or did she want to have his baby?

I think it's Lee's cyloness that made him distance himself from that whole situation. He had a feeling it was a bad idea for him to have a baby, so he pushed her away.

If she was prenant, with Lee's baby? Well.... the best I can do is quote (from the David Lynch movie "eraserhead") Eraserhead's newly pregnant wife: "But the docters don't even know if it's a baby yet!"

when starbuck was saying the names of all the nuggets, she stops, and then lee finishes with "to all of them" or something like that. maybe he's talking about more than just viper pilots.....

I'm not sure who has more "hunches" Lee or Baltar...

I tried to post this a couple days ago, but the site wasn't loading properly (uh-oh...), so here goes.

Starchild--I love the idea about the parallel being drawn between Lee and Kara at death's door. I'd like to refer you back to the Kara-Sharon conversation, when Kara says she sees Sharon as the same kid who botched her landings, etc..., and Sharon kept calling the Colonials "we...I mean, you". This was an important moment, where the writers gave a very concise (and very emotional) conversation that said, "Not only do the Cylons look like us, they have the same emotions. So what's the real difference, in the end?" Coming back to the viper pilot parallel, they both have the same moments of desparation. They both left someone behind on Caprica. Lee knows that his love is dead, but Starbuck just needed to find hope to continue on. They look like us, and have the same emotions.

The "I'm sorry" may have to do with Shevon. According to an interview with Jamie, Lee had been seeing her for several episodes without our knowing about it. Of course there's also the possibility of an "I'm sorry for being a Cylon," of course that would have to have been subconsciously meant.
Lee's Cylon side was definitely active in that scene with Baltar & Six. Another test for Baltar.
It was nice to see the stress affecting Apollo and Starbuck in Scar, losing all those young pilots they had just barely started training and getting to know. Yet another guilt trip for Lee.
